India

Kolkata (Bangla: কলকাতা), formerly known as Calcutta is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and is situated on the east bank of river Hooghly. The urban agglomeration of Kolkata is India's second largest such agglomeration with a population of more than 13 million. It was the capital of British India until 1911 when the capital was shifted to New Delhi. Once one of the most important cities of the British Empire, the city lost out on much of its past glory and economic importance in the years following Indian independence, though it is now undergoing a process of economic uplift and revival.
